Straight answers to the questions we hear most from families. Still unsure after reading? Email the secretariat, we'll connect you with a club coach in your area.

What age can my child start fencing?

Most OFC clubs accept children from age 6–8. Before that, kids use foam weapons in playful movement sessions. Judgement is made on coordination and focus, not just age.

Is fencing dangerous?

No. Fencing is among the safest combat sports. Every athlete wears FIE-certified mask (350N minimum), jacket and plastron (800N), glove, and breeches. Blades are flexible. Our safeguarding policy governs every session.

How much time do sessions take?

Youth sessions are 1.5–2 hours, 2–3 times per week. Most clubs run between 17:00 and 20:00 so homework and family routines aren't disrupted. Full schedule: /training.

What will it cost?

Club fees are set by each club (typically OMR 20–40/month). Equipment is loaned in the first months. The annual OFC athlete licence is OMR 15. A hardship waiver is available if cost is a barrier.

Will fencing help my child academically?

Yes, indirectly. Fencing trains focus, decision-making under time pressure, emotional regulation after losses, and goal-setting. Coaches and several studies link these to better classroom performance. It is not a shortcut, though; it is a habit.

Who supervises the children?

Every training session has a head coach and at least one assistant, both holding valid criminal-record certificates and Safe Sport training (see screening policy). Parents are welcome to observe any session.

Can girls and boys train together?

Yes at youth level, in mixed classes led by coaches. Competition is separated into girls' and boys' categories per FIE rules. Many clubs also offer girls-only sessions on request.

Do parents travel with kids to tournaments?

For under-15 international trips, at least one guardian typically accompanies. For domestic events we provide transport and on-site supervision. Every overnight trip has a published safeguarding plan.

What if my child wants to quit?

We keep it voluntary always. Many kids go through a "I don't feel like it" phase after a loss, talking to the coach is usually enough. We never pressure children or parents to stay.

How do I know if my child has talent?

Give it 3–4 months. If the child enjoys sessions, shows up willingly, and improves coordination, that's enough to keep going. "Talent" is over-rated, consistency is the real predictor of long-term results.

Ready to try a session?

Start with a visit to the nearest club. Trial sessions are free, equipment is provided, and no prior experience is needed.
