Beginner's Guide

Start Fencing in Oman

ابدأ رحلتك مع المبارزة في عُمان

Whether you are eight years old picking up your first weapon, or an adult wanting to learn an Olympic sport, fencing in Oman is open to you. Six straightforward steps will take you from curious beginner to club competitor.

  1. 1

    Pick a club

Visit the clubs directory and choose the club nearest to you in Muscat, Salalah, Quryat, Masirah or elsewhere. The committee can match beginners with a club — just reach out.

  2. 2

    Attend an introductory session

Most clubs run a free or low-cost introductory session. You will be given loaner gear — jacket, mask, foil — and walked through stance, movement and the basic attacks.

  3. 3

    Learn the three weapons

Your coach will usually start you with foil. As you progress, you can explore épée or sabre — each has its own scoring rules, target area and style. Read our disciplines guide to understand the differences.

  4. 4

    Buy your own gear

Once you've committed to the sport, invest in a personal jacket, breeches, plastron, mask, glove and weapon. A full beginner setup starts from around 150–250 OMR, with competitive gear costing more.

  5. 5

    Enter your first tournament

The Oman Fencing Committee runs a national championship every year, plus ranking events. Your club will enter you when you're ready. Pool rounds let new fencers gain real-match experience against peers.

  6. 6

    Aim for the national team

Consistent top-three finishes at the Sultanate of Oman Fencing Championship and ranking events open the door to national-team training camps and international competition — Gulf, Arab, Asian and beyond.
