Fencing in Oman — FAQ

المبارزة في عُمان — الأسئلة الشائعة

How do I start fencing in Oman?

Beginners can join any of the eight clubs recognised by the Oman Fencing Committee. Contact the committee directly through the website or email [email protected] and we will connect you with the club nearest to you. Most clubs welcome children from age eight upwards and provide loaner equipment for new trainees.

How old do I need to be to start fencing?

Most club programmes accept children from the age of eight, with dedicated youth categories up to under-17. Adults can join recreational and competitive adult tracks — there is no upper age limit.

Which weapon should I start with?

Foil is the most common starting weapon because it teaches the fundamentals — footwork, priority and precision — that transfer to épée and sabre later. Your club coach will advise based on your physique and preferences.

How much does it cost to join a club?

Fees vary by club. Most clubs offer introductory sessions at low or no cost, followed by monthly or term-based membership. Equipment — jacket, mask, plastron, glove, weapon — can be borrowed from the club at the beginner stage and purchased as you progress.

Is fencing safe?

Fencing is one of the safest combat sports. Athletes wear protective clothing rated for at least 350 Newtons (800N for international competition), masks certified to international standards, and blades designed to flex on impact. Serious injuries are rare.

How does scoring work?

Each valid hit registered by the electric scoring apparatus counts as one point. The referee interprets priority rules in foil and sabre and resolves simultaneous actions. Bouts are fenced to 5 points in pool rounds (3 minutes) or 15 points in direct-elimination rounds (three 3-minute periods).

What equipment do I need to buy?

At the competitive level a fencer typically owns: a jacket and plastron, breeches, mask, fencing shoes, at least one weapon with a body cord, a glove, and knee-high socks. Beginners can borrow most of this from their club while they decide to continue.

How do I make the national team?

National-team selection is based on performance at the Sultanate of Oman Fencing Championship and committee-organised ranking events. Coaches shortlist fencers for training camps, and final selections are made by the technical committee based on results in domestic and regional competitions.

Does Oman send fencers to international competitions?

Yes. Omani fencers compete regularly at GCC, Arab, West Asian, Asian and World-level events. In 2025 alone, Oman collected a bronze medal at the Asian Junior Championship in Kuwait and 36 medals at the West Asia Championship in Bahrain.

Who is the president of the Oman Fencing Committee?

Khalid bin Said Al Shu'bi chairs the Oman Fencing Committee. The committee operates under the umbrella of the Oman Olympic Committee and manages the sport's administrative, technical and competitive affairs across the Sultanate.
