Muscat: The Oman Fencing Committee (OFC) delegation participated in the 2022 Annual General Congress of the Fencing International Federation in Lausanne, Switzerland.
For the first time, the Sultanate's delegation included Omani women: Sameera al Shukaili, Secretary General of OFC, and Rumaitha al Busaidy, Board member of OFC. This landmark inclusion reflects the committee's commitment to gender inclusion in sports governance.
During the congress, topics related to the global development of fencing were discussed, and members reviewed the agenda of fencing events for forthcoming years. Members of FIE also voted for Saudi Arabia to host the Fencing Youth World Championships in 2024.
The OFC, established in January 2019, received FIE membership approval at the 2019 Annual Congress. The committee also holds Asian and Arab federation memberships.
Oman's national fencing team had impressed in recent regional events, clinching 19 medals in the West Asian Fencing Championship in Jordan — including nine gold medals. Following this success, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth announced a support package for talented young athletes, including two fencers: Israa al Siyabi and Al Harith al Harthy, enabling them to undertake proper international preparation programmes.
