Foil

الشيش

Foil is the most technical of the three Olympic fencing weapons. Built around the concept of priority — known as "right of way" — the weapon demands precise footwork, clean blade actions and psychological composure. Points are scored only on the torso with the tip of the blade, making target acquisition and blade deflection equally important.

Rules at a Glance

Target area

Torso only — from shoulders to groin at the front, and from shoulders to the waist at the back. Arms, head and legs are off-target.

Scoring

Points are scored only with the tip of the blade, which must depress under at least 500 grams of pressure to register on the electric box.

Right of way

Foil uses the convention of "right of way" — when both fencers land at the same time, the referee awards the point to the fencer who initiated the last uninterrupted attack.

Weapon spec

Maximum 500 grams. Blade no longer than 90 cm, total length up to 110 cm.

Playing style

Foil rewards finesse, timing, blade control and the ability to establish and transfer priority. Matches are often decided by millisecond reactions and clean technique rather than raw power.

History

Originally designed as a practice weapon for duelling in the 17th century, foil became the foundational discipline of modern classical fencing and is the first weapon most young fencers in Oman are introduced to.
